Skynet is on the Horizon

Dozens of Drones Swarm in the Cloudy Sky.

Each drone in the swarm will separate at a minimum distance, align toward the direction of near neighbors, and cohere to maintain harmonious movement. This behavior allows attack drones to spread out over large areas and execute “omnidirectional attacks,” descending on the enemy from all angles.

It seems like science fiction, but now we can truly appreciate just how easy Skynet is to accomplish. We have companies advertising creating these swarms of killers, and it looks like everybody is all in. Will they be all in when somebody decides to do this to Miami or LA or DC? The sentiment would swiftly change at that point.

In a 2018 study conducted for the US Air Force, drone specialist Zachary Kallenborn correctly argued that lethal drone swarms should be declared weapons of mass destruction.

Things are going to be going from bad to worse for a while yet, but perhaps at some point, we can come to some agreement that robots flying around blowing stuff up is scary enough to start dialing back the dial a bit. Most likely, it would be a good idea for nobody to hold their breath waiting for that to happen.
